Stay Safe!

I had an interesting experience this past weekend learning about Internet safety and then being required to teacher someone else how to be safe. I have always thought I was careful about the kind of information I gave out on websites like Facebook and e-mail and I still feel I am doing ok, but as I researched being safe online I found many ideas on how to improve and things to watch out for as I serf the web. Specifically I found that it doesn't always mean being careful about giving out personal information, it is about giving specifics that someone could use as answers to security questions. As I taught the ideas I had learned it brought to my attention other ideas and highlighted new things to be cautious of as I search the internet. The person I was teaching felt certain things were important that I hadn't thought of but once they pointed them out I found they were important for me to look for and for me to teacher my future children and students. We talked particularly about day to day things people can to do to stay safe like use reliable search engines, take advantage of bookmarking tools, check the activity of internet usage, be careful of free software downloaded from the internet, use filters, and a number of other ways to stay protected. This was a great activity for me and I have already started noticing what I do on the internet and what kind of information I am giving out. So to everyone else, stay safe and be careful what you say.
